When you see the sirens in your rearview mirror, here are somethings you should do:*
- Do not ever admit you did anything illegal. You do not have to say anything, so say as little as possible.
- Make sure to ask the officer why he pulled you over.
- Write down all of the notes you can during or shortly after you are pulled over (so as not to forget).
- What time of day was it?
- When you first saw the officer, was he driving in the same direction as you? In the opposite direction? Or parked watching traffic pass by (and possibly measuring your speed)?
- How long did you see the officer behind you before he turned his sirens on?
- How fast were you traveling at the time the officer turned his sirens on?
- Was traffic Moderate? Heavy? Light? This is listed on the citation, but the officer may make a mistake in recording this information.
- Did the officer contradict himself at any point during your conversation with him?
- Did the officer write down something on your citation but say something else? (Example: He may tell you that you travled 85 mph but put 80+ on your citation).
- Did the officer do anything out of the ordinary?
